Kakinada port to be linked to NH-216 by four-lane greenfield road
Kakinada, Aug 19 (TNT): A five-km four-lane greenfield road is proposed to connect Kakinada port with National Highway-216 near Uppalanka, District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad said on Wednesday.
Chairing a meeting with officials at the Collectorate here, the Collector said the proposed road would start from the south gate of Kakinada port and provide a direct connection to NH-216.
At present, cargo vehicles from the port have to pass through Kakinada city and travel around 27 km to reach NH-216. The proposed road would reduce the distance to about five km, he said.
The project would help ease traffic congestion, improve road safety, reduce fuel consumption and environmental pollution and create employment opportunities for local people, Prasad said.
He directed officials to take into account road alignment, land acquisition, environmental clearances and other statutory requirements while finalising the project.
Prasad asked officials to examine suggestions from the Kakinada port, Railways, Forest and Fisheries departments and compare them with the alignment prepared by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) before finalising the alignment.
NHAI officer B. Krishnamurty made a PowerPoint presentation on the proposed four-lane greenfield road.
District Revenue Officer Dr T. Tippe Naik and officials from various departments attended the meeting.
