Jain philosophy offers timeless wisdom for peace, harmony: Telangana Governor
Hyderabad, Sept 13 (TNT): Jain philosophy, with its emphasis on ahimsa, aparigraha and anekantavada, offers timeless wisdom for promoting peace, harmony and sustainable progress in the contemporary world, Telangana Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla said on Sunday.
Addressing a Jain religious discourse organised by the Sri Kalyankari Tapagacch Varshavas Samiti at Exhibition Grounds, Nampally, the Governor said the eternal principles of Jain philosophy could serve as a moral and spiritual compass for humanity.
Speaking in the presence of Acharya Bhagwant Shri Vimalsagar Surishwarji Maharaj Saheb and the Jain monastic community, Shukla said the teachings of Jain Tirthankaras represented a profound quest for truth, self-discipline, compassion and spiritual elevation.
He said their message transcended the boundaries of time and tradition and continued to provide meaningful guidance for human conduct and social life.
“True religion is not confined to rituals or observances. It finds its highest expression in the purity of one’s thoughts, the nobility of one’s conduct, compassion towards all living beings and a sincere commitment to the welfare of society,” the Governor said.
Shukla said ahimsa was not merely the absence of violence but a deeper commitment to reverence for life and universal compassion. Aparigraha taught restraint and responsible stewardship of natural resources, while anekantavada encouraged humility in the pursuit of truth and respect for diverse perspectives.
These principles, he said, were deeply aligned with India’s civilisational ethos and could contribute to strengthening social harmony, mutual respect and democratic coexistence.
Referring to Paryushan Parva, the Governor said its emphasis on introspection, forgiveness and self-purification carried a profound message for society. Michchhami Dukkadam, he said, symbolised not merely seeking forgiveness but also the triumph of humility over ego and restoration of harmony in human relationships.
He lauded the Jain community for its longstanding commitment to jeev daya, service and philanthropy and said its contributions to education, healthcare, commerce and social welfare reflected the tradition of combining spiritual values with social responsibility.
The Governor called upon the younger generation to draw inspiration from the lives and teachings of Jain Tirthankaras and translate their values into action by promoting compassion, environmental responsibility, social service and nation-building.
Acharya Bhagwant Shri Vimalsagar Surishwarji Maharaj Saheb, Jain monks, office-bearers of the Jain community, members of the Sri Kalyankari Tapagacch Varshavas Samiti and devotees participated in the programme.
