INCOIS regional centre likely to come up in Kakinada soon: MP Sana Sathish

Kakinada, Sept 15 (TNT): Efforts are underway to establish a regional centre of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS) or the National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT) in Kakinada, Rajya Sabha member Sana Sathish Babu said on Tuesday.

Sathish Babu said he had met Union Minister Jitendra Singh in Delhi on July 21 and urged him to establish the regional centre in Kakinada.

The proposed centre would provide fishermen with information on potential fishing zones, weather conditions, cyclones and advance warnings about possible accidents at sea, besides strengthening coastal safety, he said.

The Union Minister had responded positively to the request and informed him that it had been forwarded to the concerned department for identification of suitable land and obtaining the necessary permissions, Sathish Babu said.

In a communication dated September 9, the Union Minister informed the MP that the proposal had been examined by the Ministry of Earth Sciences in consultation with the concerned institutions.

INCOIS, Hyderabad, had approached the Andhra Pradesh government for allocation of suitable land to establish a regional facility aimed at strengthening ocean observations and providing advisory services along the Andhra Pradesh coast, the Minister said in the communication.

Sathish Babu expressed hope that the proposal to establish the regional centre of NIOT/INCOIS in Kakinada would materialise soon.
