Hyd: Over 7,000 visit CCMB on Open Day to explore scientific research
Hyderabad, September 26 (TNT): More than 7,000 people visited the CSIR-Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) here on Saturday for its annual Open Day, which offered students and the public an opportunity to learn about scientific research and interact with scientists.
The event featured exhibits and discussions on the themes of ‘Life Around Us’ and ‘Health’, with CCMB research groups explaining their work in biology and healthcare to visitors.
School and college students formed the majority of the visitors.
Nearly half of the schools attending the event visited CCMB or any research institute for the first time, highlighting the need to expand science outreach, the Centre said.
CCMB Director Dr. Vinay K. Nandicoori said the Open Day provided scientists and Ph.D. students an opportunity to explain their research to the public and understand the questions and perspectives of young people.
Such interactions helped researchers assess the gap between their work and people’s everyday experiences and inspired them to focus on issues affecting society, he said.
Students from Guru Nanak High School in Hyderabad explored topics ranging from liquid nitrogen and cancer to eye and brain research and spiders.
Nandicoori said the institute’s experience underscored the need for greater science outreach, despite its existing study-tour programmes for schools and colleges.
Hyderabad-based DOBARA Senior Wellbeing brought 700 students to the event as part of its school support programme.
The organisation’s founders, Ayesha and Imran Taiyebi, said the students experienced scientific discovery through quizzes, games, interactive exhibits and discussions on career opportunities in science and research.
