Government conducts e-auction for 730 private FM channels across 234 cities
New Delhi, July 24 (TNT): The Government conducted e-auctions for 730 private FM radio channels across 234 new cities on July 9 and 10, 2025 through a transparent process, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting informed the Rajya Sabha on Friday.
In a written reply to an Unstarred Question raised by MP I.S. Inbadurai, Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting and Parliamentary Affairs Dr L. Murugan said the auction process was widely publicised through print and electronic media.
During the auction cycle, 18 successful bidders participated, including nine new entrants to the private FM radio sector.
At present, 386 private FM radio channels are operational across the country.
The Minister said that under the Private FM Radio Policy, broadcasters are required to ensure that at least 20 per cent of their daily broadcast content is in the local language of the respective city and promotes local content, including programmes related to local culture, traditions and folk music.
The Private FM Radio Phase-III Policy also allows broadcasters to access Prasar Bharati towers and sites, wherever available, to facilitate faster rollout of services.
The government issues Letters of Intent (LOIs) and executes Grant of Permission Agreements (GOPA) with defined timelines for operationalisation, particularly in Left Wing Extremism (LWE)-affected and aspirational districts.
Dr Murugan said the government follows a multi-pronged approach to ensure effective use of FM radio platforms, including monitoring public service announcements and government schemes.
He added that the government maintains coordination with broadcasters for timely dissemination of verified information during emergencies and important campaigns.
