Dr Reddy’s gets Brazil approval for generic semaglutide injection
Hyderabad, Nov 5 (TNT): Hyderabad-based pharma major Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories on Thursday announced that Brazil’s National Health Surveillance Agency (ANVISA) has granted marketing authorisation for its generic semaglutide injection for the treatment of adults with inadequately controlled type 2 diabetes.
The product will be available in pre-filled, multi-dose injectable pens in two strengths — 2 mg/1.5 mL and 4 mg/3 mL — for once-weekly administration, the company said in a release.
The drug is indicated as an adjunct to diet and exercise, either as a monotherapy for patients who cannot use metformin due to intolerance or contraindications, or in combination with other diabetes medicines.
Brazil has an estimated 16.6 million adults aged between 20 and 79 living with diabetes, making it the sixth-largest country globally in terms of the number of adults affected by the disease.
The country’s semaglutide market for diabetes treatment is estimated at around USD 244.6 million, the company said.
MV Ramana, Chief Executive Officer, Global Generics, Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories, said the approval would help expand access to semaglutide in markets with significant patient needs.
The company plans to launch the product in Brazil in partnership with Aché, he added.
