Deep depression to cross North Andhra-South Odisha coast near Kalingapatnam
Visakhapatnam, Sept 23 (TNT): A deep depression over the Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh-South Odisha coasts between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, close to Kalingapatnam, during Wednesday evening, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said.
The system moved westwards at a speed of 5 kmph during the past six hours and lay centred at 0300 UTC (8.30 am IST) on Wednesday near latitude 18.0°N and longitude 84.6°E, about 60 km southeast of Kalingapatnam, 140 km east-northeast of Visakhapatnam, 150 km south of Gopalpur and 240 km south-southwest of Puri.
It is likely to cross the coast as a deep depression between 1500 and 1800 UTC (8.30 pm and 11 pm IST), close to Kalingapatnam, the bulletin said.
The system has an estimated central pressure of 995 hPa, with maximum sustained winds of 30 knots gusting to 40 knots. Sea conditions remained very rough over the Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal.
Kalingapatnam recorded a sea-level pressure of 996.4 hPa and a pressure fall of 6.9 hPa during the past 24 hours, while Visakhapatnam recorded 999.0 hPa with a pressure fall of 6.4 hPa.
Gopalpur and Puri recorded pressures of 999.8 hPa and 1001.1 hPa, respectively.
Satellite imagery indicated scattered to broken low- and medium-level clouds with embedded intense to very intense convection over south Odisha, coastal Andhra Pradesh and the Westcentral Bay of Bengal.
Moderate to intense convection was also reported over east Uttar Pradesh, east Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, Marathwada, Karnataka, Telangana, Rayalaseema, north Tamil Nadu and Chhattisgarh, the bulletin added.
