Hyderabad, May 1 (TNT): C. V. Anand, a 1991-batch IPS officer, on Friday assumed charge as the Director General of Police (DGP) of Telangana at the DGP headquarters in Lakdikapul.
Anand, who was serving as Special Chief Secretary (Home), succeeded B. Shivadhar Reddy, who retired on April 30. He is set to hold the post till June 2028.
The Telangana government had appointed Anand earlier this week as the state’s senior-most IPS officer to take over as full-time DGP, ending a nine-year gap marked by legal disputes and interim arrangements.
The DGP post had remained without a full-time appointment since the tenure of Anurag Sharma ended in November 2017. Since then, the state police force had been led by a series of in-charge DGPs, including M. Mahender Reddy, Anjani Kumar, Ravi Gupta, Jitender and Shivadhar Reddy, with tenures ranging from a few months to several years.
Anand was among the three officers shortlisted by the Union Public Service Commission following an empanelment process held in New Delhi on March 11.
With extensive field experience, Anand had earlier led anti-Naxal operations for nearly a decade in districts such as Warangal, Bellampalli and Nizamabad.
As Deputy Inspector General in the CID’s Economic Offences Wing, he also headed a team to Bangkok in 2006 to secure the extradition of Krushi Bank scam accused Venkateshwara Rao.
The new DGP is expected to prioritise police recruitment and modernisation of the force during his tenure.
