Congress’s ‘Save Democracy March’ is a ‘Save Dynasty March’: BJP MP K. Laxman
Hyderabad, Oct 2 (TNT): BJP Rajya Sabha member and Parliamentary Board member Dr. K. Laxman on Friday criticised the Congress-led nationwide ‘Save Democracy March’, alleging that it was aimed at protecting the political interests of a family rather than safeguarding democratic institutions.
Addressing a press conference at the BJP state headquarters here, Laxman accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and the party of adopting double standards on electoral processes.
He alleged that the Congress questioned electronic voting machines (EVMs) and the Election Commission when it lost elections but accepted the results in states where it secured victories.
Laxman defended the revision of electoral rolls, saying the process was intended to remove duplicate entries, names of deceased voters and other ineligible entries while facilitating the enrolment of eligible young voters.
He alleged that the Congress was opposing the exercise without providing sufficient evidence of wrongdoing and accused it of attempting to protect bogus votes.
He also criticised the Congress for questioning the Election Commission and demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Referring to the Emergency imposed during Indira Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, Laxman accused the Congress of having a history of undermining constitutional institutions.
Laxman accused the Congress government in Telangana of undermining democratic principles through the alleged defection of BRS MLAs.
Referring to the controversy over legislators elected on the BRS symbol joining the Congress, he questioned whether the state was being governed by what he termed an “RR Constitution”, referring to Rahul Gandhi and Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy.
He also questioned the Congress’s opposition to EVMs, pointing out that the machines were introduced during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister.
Laxman further criticised Rahul Gandhi’s opposition to the ‘One Nation, One Election’ proposal, noting that simultaneous Lok Sabha and Assembly elections had been held in 1952, 1957, 1962 and 1967.
Earlier, Laxman paid tributes to Mahatma Gandhi and former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri on their birth anniversaries.
He accused the Congress of making allegations against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi out of political frustration, while asserting that the BJP remained committed to development and democratic governance.
He also criticised Rahul Gandhi for making remarks about Indian democracy abroad, alleging that such statements undermined the country’s image.
Laxman said the people would respond to the Congress through the democratic process.
BJP state media spokesperson Subhash was present at the press conference.
