Congress MP Vamsi Krishna seeks transparency in CEC appointment

New Delhi, Oct 2 (TNT): Congress MP Gaddam Vamsi Krishna on Friday called for greater transparency in the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and stronger safeguards for voters’ rights to strengthen public confidence in India’s democratic institutions.

Referring to the 2023 law governing the appointment of the CEC, Vamsi Krishna said the selection committee comprises the Prime Minister, the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister.

In a statement , he urged Parliament to consider a mechanism that would ensure greater institutional independence and public confidence in the appointment process.

He stressed that democracy, constitutional safeguards and every citizen’s right to vote must remain a priority. Concerns and allegations relating to the electoral process should be addressed transparently by the concerned constitutional institutions, he said.

The MP called for greater transparency in electoral rolls, accessible grievance-redressal mechanisms and effective protection of voting rights.

Citizens should not have to approach multiple offices to establish or safeguard their right to vote, he added.

Vamsi Krishna also highlighted the Election Commission’s voter services, which enable citizens to check electoral-roll details, registration status and other election-related information.

“Every vote matters and every citizen’s voice matters. Public confidence in the electoral system must be protected and strengthened,” he said, urging constitutional institutions to ensure accountability and strengthen public trust in the electoral process.
