Centre Says Three Nuclear Reactors Commissioned Since 2023-24; 10 Units Under Construction
New Delhi, July 29 (TNT): Three nuclear power reactors with a combined generation capacity of 2,100 MW have been commissioned since 2023-24, while 10 reactors with a total capacity of 8,000 MW are currently under construction across the country, the Centre informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
In a written reply, Union Minister of State for Atomic Energy Dr. Jitendra Singh said the commissioned units comprise Kakrapar Atomic Power Project (KAPP)-3 and 4 in Gujarat, with a combined capacity of 1,400 MW, and Rajasthan Atomic Power Project (RAPP)-7 at Rawatbhata in Rajasthan with a capacity of 700 MW.
He said construction of Kaiga-5 and 6 in Karnataka, with a combined capacity of 1,400 MW, has commenced since 2023-24, keeping the number of reactors under construction at 10.
The projects under implementation include RAPP-8 in Rajasthan; Kudankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP)-3 and 4 and KKNPP-5 and 6 in Tamil Nadu; the 500-MW Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR-1) at Kalpakkam; Kaiga-5 and 6 in Karnataka; and Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP)-1 and 2 in Haryana.
The Union Minister said the progress of nuclear power projects is being reviewed regularly at various levels to ensure adherence to scheduled timelines.
Dr. Singh also said the SHANTI Act, 2025, is expected to facilitate wider participation of private industry and research institutions in the nuclear power sector, with the aim of promoting growth in the country’s energy sector.
