Hyderabad, May 1 (TNT): Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) President K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) on Firday launched a sharp political attack on the BJP-led Central government, demanding an immediate rollback of the recent LPG price hike and terming it “anti-poor” and “anti-worker.”
Addressing May Day celebrations at Telangana Bhavan here, KTR alleged that the steep increase in LPG cylinder prices reflects the Centre’s “insensitivity” towards labourers and middle-class households.
He claimed the hike—reportedly close to ₹1,000—was unprecedented and would severely burden the common man.
Calling it a “May Day gift” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he said the move exposes what he described as the government’s “anti-labour policies,” arguing that instead of providing relief, the Centre was adding financial stress on workers.
He warned that the sharp rise in commercial LPG cylinder prices, now around ₹3,315 in Hyderabad, could hit the hospitality sector hard, potentially leading to closures of hotels and eateries and affecting lakhs of livelihoods.
He added that small businesses and self-employed workers would bear the brunt of the decision.
KTR also linked the price hike to broader economic concerns, alleging that rising fuel prices and a weakening rupee under the BJP government have pushed inflation higher.
He criticised the Centre’s taxation policies on petrol, diesel and LPG, claiming they have significantly increased the cost of living.
Referring to global developments, he said economic uncertainties, including tensions involving Iran and the United States, had already impacted sectors like hospitality, and the latest hike would aggravate the situation.
The BRS leader further alleged that even smaller LPG cylinders used by low-income groups were not spared, warning that the increase would lead to higher food prices and affect every household.
Demanding immediate corrective action, he urged the Centre to roll back LPG, petrol and diesel price hikes and called for wider public resistance against rising fuel costs, positioning the issue as a key political concern affecting the masses.
