APSRTC Bus Rams Parked Lorry in Vizag 3 Killed; Minister Announces Rs 5 Lakh Ex-Gratia

Visakhapatnam, May 31 (TNT): Three persons, including an APSRTC bus driver, were killed and seven others injured when a state-run bus rammed into a stationary lorry at Srinagar Junction under the Gajuwaka police station limits in the wee hours of Sunday.

The deceased were identified as R. Rambabu (50) of Salur, R. Radha Madhavi (35) and L. Eswaramma (55), both residents of Rajamahendravaram. Two women passengers and the driver died on the spot, police said.

According to police, the accident occurred around 4 a.m. when the APSRTC Super Luxury bus, carrying about 30 passengers, was proceeding from Rajamahendravaram to Ramabhadrapuram in Vizianagaram district and collided with a lorry parked on the roadside near Srinagar.

Seven passengers sustained injuries and were shifted to the King George Hospital (KGH) for treatment. The bus was badly damaged in the impact.

Gajuwaka police rushed to the scene after receiving information and launched rescue operations. A case has been registered and an investigation is underway to ascertain the cause of the accident.

Expressing shock over the tragedy, State Transport Minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy visited KGH and met the injured. He announced an ex gratia of ₹5 lakh each to the families of the deceased and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical care for those injured.

The minister also ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the accident and sought a detailed report. He was accompanied by TDP State President and MLA Palla Srinivasa Rao, District Collector  Abhishek and other officials.
