Amaravati, Apr 26 (TNT): Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu will lay the foundation stone for a ‘Google AI Data Centre’ in Visakhapatnam on April 28, marking a major step in Andhra Pradesh’s push to emerge as a global technology hub.
The project, with an estimated investment of USD 15 billion, is among the largest foreign direct investments in India’s technology sector.
Once operational, the facility is expected to position Visakhapatnam prominently on the global tech map and serve as a key AI gateway for Asia.
According to official sources, the data centre will have a capacity of 1 Gigawatt and will be developed across nearly 600 acres in Tharluwada, Adavivaram and Rambilli regions, outskirts of Visakhapatnam.
The initiative has been facilitated by the state government’s industry-friendly policies aimed at attracting large-scale investments.
The upcoming project will be supported by subsea cable connectivity, enabling direct digital links between Visakhapatnam and multiple international destinations.
The facility will offer large-scale data storage along with advanced AI cloud infrastructure.
Officials said the coastal city’s strategic location makes it ideal for submarine cable landing stations, further strengthening its position as a digital hub. Companies such as AdaniConneX and Airtel Nxtra are associated with the project, while the government envisions developing a multi-gigawatt digital ecosystem of up to 6.5 GW capacity in the long term.
The data centre is expected to generate significant employment opportunities across sectors including artificial intelligence, cloud computing, cybersecurity and data science, while also attracting investments in allied industries such as power systems, cooling technologies and networking.
With global firms increasingly focusing on Visakhapatnam, infrastructure projects like the upcoming Bhogapuram International Airport are expected to enhance the city’s international connectivity and investment appeal.
Officials said the project aligns with the broader vision of transforming Andhra Pradesh into a major technology powerhouse under the Viksit Bharat 2047 initiative.
