AM Green, VOC Port Sign MoU to Develop Green Ammonia Bunkering Hub at Tuticorin
Tuticorin, June 12 (TNT): AM Green, one of India’s leading green hydrogen and ammonia developers, and the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority (VOCPA) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to jointly develop VOC Port at Tuticorin as a strategic green ammonia production and marine bunkering hub.
The agreement, signed in last month, marks a significant step in India’s clean energy transition and supports the country’s ambition to emerge as a global leader in green hydrogen and its derivatives, the company said in a release here on Friday.
Under the partnership, AM Green and VOCPA plan to develop green ammonia bunkering infrastructure with a capacity of up to 200 kilo tonnes per annum (KTPA) by 2029-30, involving an estimated investment of Rs 2,000 crore.
The partners have also identified the potential to scale up the bunkering capacity to 500 KTPA by 2035, subject to market demand and wider adoption of low-carbon marine fuels.
The expanded project could attract a total investment of around Rs 5,000 crore.
As part of the collaboration, the two organisations will explore pilot bunkering operations and jointly develop the infrastructure required for green ammonia bunkering in line with international standards and best practices.
The MoU also reinforces AM Green’s plans to establish a one million tonnes per annum (1 MTPA) green ammonia production facility near VOC Port with an investment of approximately Rs 15,000 crore. The port authority has committed support for the development of the project.
AM Green has already completed a substantial portion of land acquisition required for the proposed green hydrogen and ammonia complex.
In addition, the project is expected to facilitate investments worth about Rs 35,000 crore in renewable energy generation, supporting the company’s broader goal of developing more than 4 MTPA of green ammonia production capacity across India by 2030.
The partnership aims to leverage Tuticorin’s strategic location, established port infrastructure and growing industrial ecosystem to create a globally competitive green fuels hub catering to both domestic and international markets.
Commenting on the development, AM Green Chief Executive Officer Gautam Reddy Kumbam said VOC Port’s existing ammonia infrastructure, designation as a National Green Hydrogen Hub and proximity to major international shipping routes make it an ideal location for green ammonia bunkering.
“This partnership is a critical building block in AM Green’s pan-India commercialisation strategy. Together, we aim to position India and VOC Port at the centre of the global green maritime fuel supply chain,” he said.
VOCPA Chairman Susanta Kumar Nath said the port has long played a key role in India’s ammonia supply chain and is now poised to become a major green fuels hub.
“We are committed to providing the infrastructure, facilitation and institutional support required to make Tuticorin a leading destination for green ammonia bunkering and exports,” he said.
AM Green is promoted by the founders of the Greenko Group and is developing low-carbon ammonia projects across multiple locations in India.
The company aims to establish 5 MTPA of green ammonia production capacity and is also developing capabilities in green chemicals, sustainable aviation fuels, e-methanol and other net-zero industrial products.
