ADB, Japan sign financing agreements for major green ammonia plant in India

Manila, Oct. 15 (TNT): The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and the Government of Japan have signed financing agreements with AM Green Ammonia (India) Private Limited to support the development of a green ammonia plant in India with an annual production capacity of about 1.1 million tonnes.

The project, which will convert a natural gas-based ammonia and urea facility to renewable-powered green ammonia production, marks the first investment under the Action for Creating Energy Security for Long-term Resilience (ACCEL), launched by ADB and Japan in May 2026.

The financing includes a $100 million loan from the Leading Asia’s Private Infrastructure Fund 2, financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and administered by ADB.

The project is expected to reduce emissions from ammonia production, support India’s green ammonia export industry and strengthen energy security through the use of renewable energy instead of fossil fuels.

In a release, ADB President Masato Kanda said the project would help India produce ammonia with lower emissions and at scale, while creating opportunities for new markets and jobs.

He said the investment demonstrated how ADB and Japan could translate energy security objectives into practical projects.

Japanese Finance Minister Satsuki Katayama said strengthening the resilience of Asia’s energy supply chains was essential. Japan would continue working with ADB to diversify energy sources and improve economic resilience across the region, she said.

ACCEL aims to help countries and businesses in Asia and the Pacific manage rising energy prices and develop more resilient energy systems.

Its approach includes short-term corporate liquidity support, particularly for small and medium-sized enterprises, and medium- to long-term investments in diversified and sustainable energy infrastructure.
