AI to Transform Filmmaking but Not Replace Human Creativity, Says Anand Pandey at MIFF

Mumbai, June 20 (TNT): Artificial Intelligence (AI) is rapidly transforming the filmmaking process, but it is unlikely to replace professionals in the industry entirely, according to animation producer and creative technologist Anand Pandey.

Speaking at a workshop titled “Exploring Cinema in a Compact Future” during the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival (MIFF), Pandey said AI-powered tools are becoming increasingly sophisticated and accessible, opening new possibilities for filmmakers and content creators.

Pandey, founder of Screenyug Creations and MergeXR, and known for his work on projects such as Little Krishna, Shaktimaan and Krishna Aur Kans, highlighted how filmmakers can leverage APIs and open-source platforms to access advanced AI technologies at relatively low cost.

Responding to queries on whether AI could replace roles such as assistant directors, line producers and production managers, he said technology and traditional filmmaking would continue to coexist.

Drawing parallels with the transition from film cameras to digital technology, Pandey said every technological shift changes the nature of work while creating new opportunities for professionals.

He stressed that human creativity would remain at the heart of cinema.

“Audiences connect with human emotions, stories and performances. That is something technology cannot replace,” he observed.

At the same time, AI can significantly improve efficiency by reducing production costs, correcting errors and simplifying post-production processes, he added.

The workshop also explored how AI can assist writers, creators and independent filmmakers in developing concepts, visualising scenes and communicating their creative ideas more effectively.

Participants engaged in interactive discussions on AI tools, API access and emerging career opportunities in the creative sector.

The session concluded on an optimistic note, with speakers and participants highlighting AI’s potential to empower storytellers and expand creative possibilities across the film industry.

The workshop marked the conclusion of the workshop series at the 19th Mumbai International Film Festival.
