NMDC Reviews Expansion, Sustainability Initiatives at Donimalai Complex in Karnataka
Hyderabad, June 20 (TNT): Senior management of NMDC reviewed a series of strategic projects at its Donimalai Complex in Bellary district( Karnataka), aimed at enhancing operational efficiency, promoting sustainable mining practices and strengthening community development initiatives.
During a recent visit to the complex, the management assessed the progress of key capacity expansion and infrastructure projects designed to increase production from the Kumaraswamy Mine to 10 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) and from the overall Donimalai Complex to 17 MTPA.
The expansion forms part of NMDC’s long-term objective of becoming a 100 MTPA mining company and reinforcing its position as India’s largest iron ore producer.
The management also reviewed initiatives focused on the utilisation of low-grade iron ore resources, including material containing up to 35 per cent iron content, iron ore slimes and low-grade deposits such as Banded Hematite Jasper (BHJ) and Banded Hematite Quartzite (BHQ).
Traditionally considered waste due to their lower iron content, these resources are now being processed through beneficiation and scientific mineral processing techniques to recover valuable iron ore.
According to NMDC, the initiative is helping improve mineral conservation, reduce waste generation and lower the environmental footprint of mining operations while supporting the growing raw material requirements of the domestic steel industry.
The management also reviewed the performance of the recently introduced automated gate management system at the Kumaraswamy Mine.
The digital platform enables real-time monitoring and verification of iron ore dispatches, improving transparency, operational efficiency and security in material transportation. The system is expected to reduce manual intervention while strengthening oversight of mineral movement.
NMDC said the initiatives reflect its commitment to responsible mining, resource optimisation and technology-driven operations as it advances towards its long-term growth and sustainability goals.
