Strong Winds Trigger Thrilling Races on Day Two of Monsoon Regatta in Hyderabad
Hyderabad, June 4 (TNT): After a day of calm conditions, strong winds returned to Hussain Sagar on the second day of the 17th Monsoon Regatta, producing exciting racing and several capsizes as sailors struggled to adapt to gusts reaching 18 knots.
The challenging conditions tested competitors across classes, with the Under-18 fleets delivering some closely fought contests as boats raced at high speeds across the lake.
In the International 420 Class, the Telangana Sailing Association (TSA) duo of Chandralekha Tattari of Udbhav School, Rasoolpura, and Dhanush Jakkula of MJPTBCWREIS Shamirpet dominated proceedings with two impressive victories to top the standings. They are followed by debutants Badrinath Nirudu and Rishwitha Sunchanakota, representing TSA and MJPTBCWREIS Kamareddy, respectively.
Top seed Deekshita Komaravalley was forced to retire from the regatta after suffering a shoulder injury in a capsize, ending her challenge for honours.
In the high-performance 29er Skiff Class, TSA sailors Vinod Dandu and crew Aravind Maloth won two of the three races sailed to take the overall lead. They moved ahead of top-seeded pair Sharanya Yuvaraj Jadhav and Shivam Walmiki of the Navy Youth Sailing Club (NYSC), who recently emerged victorious in the Asian Games trials held in Mumbai.
The ILCA4 (Laser) Boys category was dominated by NYSC sailors Preet Siwal and Hriday Jairam Joshi, while Katyayani Kaushik of INWTC led the Girls division.
In the Under-15 Optimist Class, Shringari Roy of Secunderabad Club claimed victory in the second race of the day.
Telangana Sailing Association President Suheim Sheikh said the Monsoon Regatta is one of the country’s premier National Ranking Championships and continues to attract some of India’s most promising young sailors.
