Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Resigns; Congress Legislature Party Meet Likely Tomorrow
Bengaluru, May 28 (TNT): Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday submitted his resignation to Governor Thaawarchand Gehlot amid indications of a leadership transition in the State Congress.
Official sources said Siddaramaiah visited Raj Bhavan and handed over his resignation letter to Prabhushankar, Special Secretary to the Governor, as the Governor was out of station on a private visit.
Addressing a press conference later, Siddaramaiah asserted that he would continue to remain active in politics and vowed to fight “communal forces” till his last breath.
He recalled his political journey from a humble background and thanked Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge for their support.
He said his government had fulfilled all promises and guarantee schemes made to the people of Karnataka.
The outgoing Chief Minister accused the Opposition and Prime Minister Narendra Modi of running a misinformation campaign against his government and blamed the Centre for the State’s revenue deficit.
Earlier, during a breakfast meeting with Cabinet colleagues, Siddaramaiah reportedly informed Ministers that he had been asked by the Congress high command to step down from the post.
Congress sources indicated that a meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) is likely to be held on Friday, during which the party’s next legislature leader and probable successor to Siddaramaiah may be elected or announced.
