Telangana Police launches ‘Bal Panchayat’ initiative to boost child participation
Hyderabad, Apr 28 (TNT): The Women Safety Wing of Telangana Police on Monday launched a week-long ‘Bal Panchayat’ (Children’s Parliament) initiative as part of a state-wide women safety awareness campaign, officials said.
The programme, held under the Praja Palana–Pragati Pranalika (99 Days Campaign), aims to promote child participation, enhance community safety and strengthen inclusive governance at the village level.
The initiative will be implemented on a pilot basis across six villages in four districts—Warangal, Medchal, Vikarabad and Medak—from April 27 to May 2.
In a release, Ms Charu Sinha, DG, CID , said ‘Bal Panchayat’ will serve as a structured platform for children to discuss local issues, suggest solutions and actively contribute to community development, while fostering leadership and confidence among them.
Each selected village will have a Bal Panchayat, with members chosen through an inclusive nomination process involving village sarpanches and headmasters, ensuring representation of both girls and boys from diverse backgrounds, she said.
The programme is being implemented by the Women Safety Wing in collaboration with the Youngistaan Foundation and as an extension of the Safe Village Programme under the My Choices Foundation, she said.
The initiative seeks to build safer and more responsive communities by empowering children to participate in decision-making processes and engage with local governance systems, she added.
