Tirupati, Apr 24(TNT): Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) has emerged as a leading institution in healthcare delivery, medical education and research, said National Medical Commission Chairman Dr Abhijit Chandrakant Sheth, here on Friday.
Addressing the 14th convocation of SVIMS held here, Sheth said the occasion marked a crucial milestone for graduating medical students who would go on to serve society by saving lives and upholding human dignity.
He lauded the institute for its modern healthcare services, research contributions and for producing skilled medical professionals.
The event was presided over by Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) Executive Officer Muddada Ravichandra, who said SVIMS continues to maintain the highest medical standards with accreditations such as NABH, NABL and Nursing Excellence.
He noted that the institute, conceptualised by N. T. Rama Rao in 1993 and granted university status in 1995, has grown into a major centre for super-speciality healthcare.
He added that SVIMS provides advanced treatment in cardiology, neurology, nephrology, urology and oncology, catering to patients from Andhra Pradesh and neighbouring states.
He also highlighted the role of the Sri Padmavathi Medical College for Women, established in 2014, in promoting women’s medical education.
Dr R. V. Kumar, Director and Vice-Chancellor, SVIMS, said the institution offers not only quality healthcare but also a spiritually significant environment at the abode of Lord Venkateswara.
He acknowledged the support of Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu in strengthening the institution’s infrastructure.
He also expressed gratitude to TTD Chairman Sri B.R. Naidu and EO Muddada Ravichandra for sanctioning an additional ₹60 crore for hospital development.
Dr Chandrasekhar, Vice-Chancellor of NTR University, urged graduates to serve poor patients with dedication and bring honour to their families and society.
He also suggested instituting awards for doctors providing selfless service.
TTD Board Member and SVIMS Governing Council Member N. Sadashiva Rao stated that cancer screening camps are being conducted through the Pink Bus initiative to promote early detection and awareness, along with free tests.
He added that under TTD, projects such as a Cancer Care Centre, a new hostel, and Cardio and Neuro Blocks are underway and will soon be made available.
During the convocation, 548 students were awarded degrees and postgraduate qualifications.
A total of 16 gold medals were presented, along with a merit certificate and a cash award to top-performing candidates.
