Union Budget ignores Telangana, alleges Dy CM Bhatti

Hyderabad, Feb 1 (TNT): Telangana has been completely ignored in the Union Budget 2026–27, alleged Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka, accusing the Centre of adopting a discriminatory and politically biased approach towards the state.

Reacting to the Union Budget presented by FM Nirmala Sitharaman in the Lok Sabha on Sunday, Bhatti said the state government had hoped for meaningful allocations for Telangana. “The Chief Minister, ministers, and a delegation of MPs met the Prime Minister and Union Ministers seeking support for key projects. Despite this, not a single major commitment has been made to Telangana,” he said.

He pointed out that crucial projects such as the Musi River rejuvenation, Regional Ring Road, and Metro Rail expansion were expected to find mention in the Budget but were completely ignored.

Even in sectors like biopharma, chemical parks, affordable sports goods, orange economy, and regional medical hubs—areas where Hyderabad has a proven national footprint—Telangana failed to receive any recognition, he added.

Bhatti noted that Hyderabad is India’s leading pharma and life sciences hub, developed significantly during Congress rule, yet the Centre overlooked the state even while announcing new biopharma and chemical park initiatives. Similarly, despite Telangana establishing a Sports University, the state was excluded from announcements related to affordable sports goods manufacturing.

The Deputy CM also criticised the Centre for shifting the focus of the orange economy away from Hyderabad and for excluding Telangana from regional medical hub initiatives.

He expressed disappointment that despite repeated representations to the Prime Minister and Union Ministers, no financial assistance was announced for the Musi River rejuvenation project.

On tourism, Bhatti said the Centre had shown “step-motherly treatment” to Telangana.

Despite the Ramappa Temple receiving UNESCO World Heritage status and the Sammakka–Saralamma Jatara drawing international attention, the Budget failed to allocate funds for tourism development in the state, the Dy CM said.

He added that the vast tourism potential between the Krishna and Godavari rivers was also ignored.

He further criticised the Centre for making no concrete announcements on semiconductor investments in Telangana, despite assurances of consideration.

“The Centre must support Telangana in setting up semiconductor infrastructure, but the Budget is silent on this,” he said.

Bhatti also alleged that welfare and employment programmes had been weakened in the Budget. He expressed concern over changes to the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS), calling the reduced Central funding share “unjust” and detrimental to the poor.

“This scheme was introduced by the Congress to provide employment security, and diluting it is unacceptable,” he said.

Stating that Telangana had intended to cooperate with the Centre in achieving national development goals, Bhatti said the state was instead met with neglect.

He urged Members of Parliament across party lines to collectively pressure the Centre to secure rightful budgetary allocations for Telangana.

He clarified that the state government would continue to engage with the Centre in the interest of development and reiterated that the government’s priority was transparent governance, not political vendetta.
