Union Commerce Secretary Assures Full Support for Pharma Export Growth at Hyderabad Meet

Hyderabad, Apr 4 (TNT): Union Commerce Secretary Rajesh Agrawal on Saturday assured full government support for the growth of pharmaceutical exports, highlighting the sector’s strong performance and future potential.

Addressing a ‘Chintan Shivir on the pharmaceutical industry’  organised by the Department of Commerce in association with the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India (PHARMEXCIL) , Agrawal said India’s pharma industry, currently valued at around USD 60 billion, has emerged as the “pharmacy of the world” due to its scale, cost competitiveness and leadership in generic medicines.

He noted that with nearly 18–19 per cent of the global population, India itself represents a large and growing market, with rising incomes expected to drive healthcare demand further.

Emphasising self-reliance, the Secretary said efforts should be made to meet 80–90 per cent of domestic pharmaceutical requirements through indigenous production, while reducing dependence on imports of APIs, bulk drugs and intermediates.

He also stressed the need to diversify export markets and strengthen supply chains amid geopolitical uncertainties, noting that India exports pharmaceuticals to around 200 countries.

Calling for a shift from a volume-driven to a value-driven industry, Agrawal underscored the importance of innovation, quality and alignment with emerging segments such as biologics and biosimilars.

He said the government is committed to working closely with industry stakeholders to build a robust quality ecosystem and enhance global trust in Indian pharmaceuticals.

The Secretary highlighted that India remains the third-largest producer of pharmaceuticals globally by volume and 14th by value. Pharma exports stood at USD 30.47 billion in 2024–25, registering a growth of 9.4 per cent, while exports during April–February 2025–26 reached USD 28.29 billion, up over 5 per cent year-on-year.

The Chintan Shivir also featured discussions on global regulatory harmonisation, foreign trade policy, digital trade facilitation and the use of artificial intelligence to improve efficiency in the sector.

The event also saw the announcement of iPHEX 2026, the 12th International Exhibition on Pharma and Healthcare Industry, scheduled to be held from September 7 to 9, 2026.

Senior officials, including Pharmexcil Chairman Namit Joshi , attended the programme.
