Hyderabad, April 1 (TNT): ICFAI Law School on Wednesday commenced a three-day international conference on “Correctional Reforms: Novel Vistas” at its campus, bringing together academicians, legal practitioners and prison administration officials to deliberate on reforms in correctional systems.
Delivering the inaugural address, Telangana State Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Dr. Soumya Mishra highlighted the shift from a punitive to a reformative approach in prison administration.
She said both police and prison systems share the goal of protecting society while enabling rehabilitation of offenders, and emphasised the need for skill development and reintegration of inmates.
Referring to global practices, she noted the role of technology in prison management in countries such as Australia, while pointing out the legal constraints in India.
She called for greater collaboration among academia, legislature and prison authorities to bring about meaningful reforms.
Vice Chancellor of ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education Prof. Tamma Koti Reddy highlighted challenges such as overcrowding in prisons, the high number of undertrial prisoners and the need for stronger statutory mechanisms. He stressed the role of the judiciary in ensuring prison welfare and advocated a humane and technology-driven approach.
Dean of ICFAI Law School Prof. Y. Pratap Reddy, in his welcome address, underscored the importance of reform-oriented criminal law discourse.
The conference will feature multiple technical sessions focusing on key aspects of correctional jurisprudence, including debates on “Jail vs Bail,” and aims to promote innovative and humane approaches to prison administration.
