KIMS Doctors save 65-Year-Old from Major Stroke Risk with Minimally Invasive Procedure in Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, Mar 25 (TNT): Doctors at KIMS Hospitals, Seethammadhara in the city on Wednesday said that they have successfully treated a 65-year-old man at high risk of a life-threatening stroke by performing a minimally invasive procedure to clear critical blockages in brain arteries.

The patient, who had been experiencing recurrent giddiness for nearly a month, later developed sudden weakness on one side of the body and was referred to KIMS for advanced care.

Doctors said investigations revealed severe blockages in the vertebral and basilar arteries, which supply blood to the brainstem, posing a high risk of a major stroke if left untreated.

A team led by Consultant Neurologist Dr Raja Kumar Ponnana and HOD, Neuro and Vascular Interventional Radiology, Dr Venkatesh Pothula, performed an emergency endovascular procedure to remove the blockage and place a stent through the blood vessel, avoiding open surgery.

The procedure successfully restored blood flow to the brain.

Following treatment, the patient was monitored in the intensive care unit and showed good recovery, with only mild neurological weakness. Doctors said his ability to move the previously affected hand was a positive sign of recovery.

The medical team emphasised that timely intervention is critical in stroke cases, noting that early diagnosis and rapid treatment can prevent severe disability and save lives.

They said coordinated efforts between departments and swift decision-making played a key role in the successful outcome.
