PM Flags Economic, Energy, Security Risks from West Asia Conflict; Calls for Unity

New Delhi, Mar 23 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said the ongoing conflict in West Asia has created serious economic, energy, and security challenges for India, while asserting that the government is fully prepared to safeguard national interests and citizens.

Addressing the Lok Sabha, Modi said the crisis, which has persisted for over three weeks, has had adverse consequences for global trade, energy supply chains, and human lives, and stressed the need for an early resolution.

He noted that India’s concerns are significant given its extensive trade relations with the region, dependence on West Asia for crude oil and gas, and the presence of nearly one crore Indians living and working in Gulf countries.

The Prime Minister said the government has taken swift steps to ensure the safety of Indian nationals abroad, including setting up 24/7 control rooms, issuing advisories, and maintaining continuous engagement with foreign governments.

He said over 3.75 lakh Indians have returned safely since the conflict began, including around 1,000 from Iran.

On energy security, Modi said India has ensured uninterrupted supply of petrol, diesel, and LPG despite disruptions in key maritime routes such as the Strait of Hormuz.

He highlighted that the country has diversified its energy imports from 27 to 41 countries over the past decade, reducing dependency on any single region.

He added that India currently maintains strategic petroleum reserves of over 53 lakh metric tonnes, with plans to expand further, alongside enhanced refining capacity.

The Prime Minister said the government is closely monitoring global shipping routes and engaging with international partners to ensure safe passage of essential supplies, including oil, gas, and fertilisers.

Referring to domestic preparedness, he said India has strengthened its energy mix through ethanol blending, expansion of renewable energy, and electrification initiatives, reducing dependence on fossil fuel imports.

On agriculture, Modi assured that adequate foodgrain stocks are available and measures are in place to support Kharif sowing and ensure fertiliser availability, shielding farmers from global disruptions.

He also said an inter-ministerial group is reviewing the situation daily to address challenges in the import-export chain and maintain economic stability.

Reaffirming India’s diplomatic stance, the Prime Minister said the country has consistently called for de-escalation, dialogue, and peaceful resolution, while opposing attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure.

He said security has been heightened across coastal, border, cyber, and strategic domains, cautioning against attempts to exploit the situation through misinformation or black-marketing.

Calling for unity, vigilance, and restraint, Modi expressed confidence that India would effectively navigate the crisis through coordinated efforts of the government and citizens.
