Early Detection Key to Fighting Breast Cancer, Say Experts at SVIMS Radiology Conference

Tirupati, Mar 15 (TNT) : Emphasising the importance of early detection in the fight against breast cancer, experts highlighted the crucial role of radiologists in disease diagnosis at the Mid-Term Radiology Conference 2026 organised by the Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMS) here on Sunday.

The conference on the theme “Basics to Advances in Breast Imaging” was organised by the Radiology Department of SVIMS in association with the Breast Imaging Society of India (BISI) here.
In-charge Medical Superintendent Dr Kotireddy said radiologists play a vital role in identifying diseases at an early stage, which significantly improves treatment outcomes, particularly in breast cancer cases.
As part of the two-day programme, a “Hands-on Workshop in Basic Interventions” was conducted on Saturday at the Ultrasound Block of the SWIMS Radiology Department.
On the second day, leading radiologists and experts from across the country presented scientific papers and discussed advances in breast imaging and diagnostic techniques.
TTD Trust Board member, SWIMS Executive Council member and Kovur MLA Vemireddy Prashanti Reddy, who attended the conference as chief guest, said the Andhra Pradesh government has been organising special medical camps for women to promote early diagnosis of cancer and other diseases.
She said the SWIMS Pink Bus, launched in 2018, has helped expand breast cancer screening services in rural and underserved regions.
She added that nearly 15,000 women in the Kovur constituency have undergone cancer screening through the mobile initiative, with around 10 per cent of cases detected early and provided treatment.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr R.V. Kumar said the Radiology Department at SVIMS is equipped with advanced technologies to improve screening, diagnosis and treatment planning for breast diseases.
He noted that specialists including breast surgeons, oncologists and pathologists are working together to strengthen awareness and early detection programmes for women.
Highlighting outreach initiatives, he said the SWIMS “Pink Bus” has been providing free cancer screening services to women, particularly in rural and remote areas.
APMC Chairman and IRIA President Dr Sri Hari Rao, said increasing cancer cases require greater focus on preventive screening and awareness.
He stressed the need for continuous medical education and regular updating of clinical knowledge among healthcare professionals.
Organising Chairman and Head of the Radiology Department Dr B. Vijayalakshmi Devi said SVIMS is equipped with modern imaging facilities including mammography, ultrasonography, breast MRI and PET-CT scans.
She urged women to undergo regular screening and create awareness about breast cancer for early detection and timely treatment.
Around 200 delegates and radiologists from across Andhra Pradesh participated in the conference and deliberated on the latest developments in breast imaging and cancer diagnosis.
