KAVACH 4.0 commissioned on 108-km SCR section for first time
Hyderabad, Sept 23 (TNT): Indian Railways has commissioned KAVACH Version 4.0 for the first time on South Central Railway (SCR), upgrading the system from Version 3.2 to 4.0 across 108 route kilometres of the Malkajgiri-Kamareddi section in Hyderabad Division, the Ministry of Railways said on Wednesday.
The latest version of the indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system features enhanced location accuracy, improved signal information in bigger yards, station-to-station KAVACH interface through Optical Fibre Cable (OFC) and direct interface with existing Electronic Interlocking Systems.
The upgrade incorporates technological improvements based on the experience gained from the deployment of KAVACH Version 3.2 over 1,465 route kilometres on SCR, and is planned for large-scale deployment across Indian Railways.
KAVACH is designed to assist loco pilots in maintaining prescribed speed limits and automatically apply brakes when required if the loco pilot fails to do so.
It also helps prevent Signal Passing at Danger (SPAD), control train speed in critical situations and reduce the risk of collisions.
The system requires the highest level of safety certification, Safety Integrity Level-4 (SIL-4).
Its implementation involves installing Station KAVACH at stations and block sections, RFID tags along the track, telecommunication towers, Optical Fibre Cable and Loco KAVACH on locomotives.
The commissioning of KAVACH 4.0 on SCR is expected to strengthen indigenous railway safety technology and support the expansion of advanced Automatic Train Protection capabilities across the Indian Railways network.
