Veteran Actor Anant Nag to receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024
New Delhi, Sept 16 (TNT): Veteran actor Anant Nag will be conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2024 for his contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema, the Government of India announced on Wednesday.
The award, recommended by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award Selection Committee, will be presented to Nag at the 72nd National Film Awards ceremony in Kevadia, Gujarat, on September 22.
Nag, who made his acting debut in the Kannada film Sankalp and Hindi debut in Ankur, has acted in more than 300 films across Kannada, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam, Tamil and Marathi cinema during a career spanning over five decades.
His notable works include Malgudi Days.
He has received five Filmfare Awards and five Karnataka State Best Actor Awards, besides the Karnataka Rajyotsava Award, Karnataka Sahitya Academy Award and Karnataka State Lifetime Achievement Award.
He also holds an honorary doctorate from Bangalore University (North).
Nag served as a Member of the Karnataka Legislative Council from 1988 to 1994 and as a Member of the Legislative Assembly from 1994 to 1999.
He also served as Minister of State for Bangalore City Development. He was conferred the Padma Bhushan in 2025.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Nag on the honour, saying his performances, versatility and artistic contribution had left a lasting mark on Indian cinema, particularly Kannada cinema.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award was instituted in 1969 to recognise outstanding contribution to the growth and development of Indian cinema.
The award comprises a Swarna Kamal medallion, a shawl and a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh.
