Energy efficiency key to meeting rising power demand: Telangana DY CM Bhatti Vikramarka
Hyderabad, Sept 16 (TNT): Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka on Wednesday said energy conservation and efficient use of electricity were essential to meeting the state’s growing power demand, stressing that every unit of electricity saved was cheaper than generating an additional unit.
Addressing the 25th CII Energy Efficiency Summit-2026 at the Hyderabad International Convention Centre (HICC) here, he said energy efficiency should be viewed not merely as an environmental measure but as a strategy to improve economic competitiveness.
“Energy demand can be met not only by generating more electricity but also by reducing consumption through efficient use of power,” Bhatti said.
He said energy policy had traditionally focused on increasing generation capacity, securing coal, adding renewable energy and expanding transmission infrastructure. However, energy efficiency offered an alternative that required neither a new power plant nor additional land, coal mines or transmission lines.
Electricity consumption could be reduced through efficient motors, advanced cooling systems, energy-efficient buildings, improved industrial processes and smart energy management systems, he said.
Rising power demand
Bhatti said Telangana’s rapid economic growth would lead to increased electricity demand, particularly from industries, manufacturing, data centres, life sciences and electronics.
He said development could not be slowed down to control power demand and the focus instead should be on generating greater economic activity from every unit of electricity consumed.
Improving energy efficiency would help industries reduce operating costs, lower peak power demand and ease pressure on generation and transmission systems, while also strengthening energy security and reducing emissions, he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister called for successful energy-saving technologies and practices to be replicated across industries.
“India does not lack successful pilot projects. The real challenge is to take a successful experiment from one factory and replicate it across 100 factories,” he said.
AI to drive energy efficiency
Bhatti said artificial intelligence, digitalisation, electrification, renewable energy and smart energy-management systems would play an important role in improving energy efficiency.
Sensors could identify energy wastage, while digital systems could continuously optimise industrial processes. AI could also identify patterns that might not be detected by human operators, he said.
He said industries should eventually become active participants in the power system rather than remaining mere consumers of electricity.
Bhatti outlined three priorities for industries — continuous monitoring of energy consumption instead of relying only on annual audits, creating mechanisms to share successful energy-saving practices across industries, and strengthening collaboration among the government, financial institutions, educational institutions, technology organisations and industry to scale up commercially viable technologies.
Telangana welcomes investors
The Deputy Chief Minister said Telangana offered an industry-friendly environment, citing its international airport, road network, Outer Ring Road, reliable power supply, skilled workforce and law-and-order situation among the state’s strengths.
“Telangana is a friendly and industry-oriented state. We consider investors to be wealth creators,” he said.
“We welcome all wealth creators to Telangana to grow together,” he added.
$3 trillion economy target
Bhatti said Telangana had set a target of becoming a $3 trillion economy by 2047.
He said industrial development, investments, infrastructure and the energy sector would have to progress in coordination to achieve the state’s long-term economic objectives.
Telangana Rising Global Summit
The Deputy Chief Minister said the state government was preparing to organise the ‘Telangana Rising Global Summit’ on December 7, 8 and 9 this year, following last year’s Global Summit.
He invited industry representatives and investors from across the world to participate in the summit and partner in Telangana’s development.
“Telangana’s development should be not only rapid but also efficient and smart,” he said.
He called for a development strategy focused on “generating more, developing more and reducing wastage,” describing it as a practical pathway towards sustainable economic growth.
