Modi, Xi discuss border peace, trade, bilateral ties
New Delhi, Sept 12 (TNT): Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday discussed bilateral ties, border peace and economic and trade issues during their meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit here.
The two leaders welcomed the steady progress in India-China relations since their last meeting in Tianjin in August 2025 and agreed that the ties should be viewed from a strategic and long-term perspective.
Modi said differences should not become disputes and stressed that the relationship should be guided by mutual respect, mutual sensitivity and mutual interest.
He underlined that peace and tranquillity in the border areas remained essential for continued development of bilateral relations and called for adherence to existing agreements and understandings on border issues.
The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable resolution of the boundary question, taking into account the overall bilateral relationship and long-term interests of the two peoples.
They also discussed promoting cultural exchanges, business linkages and greater mobility between the two countries.
On economic and trade ties, the leaders stressed the need to address concerns including structural trade imbalance and supply chain issues, and facilitate meaningful and predictable market access.
They agreed to expand common ground on regional and global issues and work together to address emerging challenges.
Modi also appreciated China’s support for India’s BRICS chairship and its contribution to the success of the BRICS Summit-2026.
