Godrej Properties launches Habitat Matters to promote low-carbon construction materials
Mumbai, Aug 28 (TNT): Godrej Properties Ltd (GPL) on Friday announced the launch of “Habitat Matters”, a CSR initiative under Godrej Good & Green Labs, the innovation arm of Good & Green, Godrej Industries Group, in partnership with Xynteo, to accelerate the adoption of low-carbon construction materials in India.
The initiative aims to bridge the gap between low-carbon material innovations and their deployment in live construction projects by identifying promising technologies, piloting them at project sites and evaluating their performance under real-world conditions, the Company said in a release.
India is witnessing a significant construction boom, with the country expected to add around 34 billion square metres of building stock by 2050.
The programme seeks to address the carbon footprint associated with materials such as cement, concrete, steel, glass and blocks, which account for a significant share of emissions from the built environment.
Godrej Properties plans to deploy low-carbon material pilots over the next five years and build a body of on-ground evidence that can support wider adoption across the real estate industry.
Rohit Mohan, Chief Design and Sustainability Officer, Godrej Properties, said the initiative was aimed at bridging the gap between promising innovations and their practical deployment at construction sites.
Pakzan Dastoor, Head, Good & Green, Godrej Industries Group, said low-carbon construction materials were among the major challenges facing the industry and stressed the need to develop solutions that could be adopted and scaled across the real estate ecosystem.
Suman Jagdev, Partner, Xynteo, said India had several innovations in low-carbon materials but faced challenges in their deployment and adoption.
Habitat Matters would connect such solutions with live construction projects and real-world conditions to establish their commercial viability, he said.
As part of the initiative, Habitat Matters has opened a Request for Applications (RFA) inviting startups, research institutions, material manufacturers and technology providers to submit low-carbon material solutions.
The programme will focus on five priority categories — cement, concrete, steel, blocks and glass — besides bio-based alternatives and other deployable embodied-carbon solutions. Innovations at Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 5 and above are eligible.
Selected applicants will have an opportunity to pilot their technologies at active construction projects and receive technical and commercialisation support to facilitate wider adoption.
