6.7 Mn Women in SHGs Receive Economic Support in Telangana: CM Revanth Reddy

Bengaluru, June 7 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has said the state government has placed women-led self-help groups at the centre of its economic empowerment strategy by providing financial assistance and business opportunities across multiple sectors.

Speaking during an interaction with N. Ram, Director of The Hindu, at The Hindu Huddle session titled “By, For, and Of the People: Good Governance for Telangana” here on Saturday, the Chief Minister said around 6.7 million women are currently associated with self-help groups across the state.

He said the SHGs have availed loans worth ₹60,000 crore at zero interest, with the state government bearing the entire interest burden to ensure affordable access to credit.

According to Reddy, the financial support has enabled women’s groups to emerge as significant economic stakeholders.

He noted that SHGs have purchased nearly 1,000 buses and have also entered the renewable energy sector as part of the government’s efforts to create sustainable livelihood opportunities.

The Chief Minister said the government has allotted petrol bunks and solar power plants to women’s groups, helping them diversify their income sources and strengthen their financial independence.

He further stated that members of self-help groups are successfully operating canteens in various government institutions and have been entrusted with developing and maintaining facilities in government schools.

Reddy said the initiatives are aimed at transforming women from beneficiaries of welfare schemes into active participants in economic development.

The Chief Minister maintained that empowering women through self-help groups has not only improved household incomes but also strengthened community-based development and grassroots entrepreneurship across Telangana.
