Willie Walsh assumes charge as IndiGo CEO
New Delhi, Aug 3 (TNT): IndiGo on Monday announced that Willie Walsh has assumed charge as its Chief Executive Officer, marking the beginning of a new phase in the airline’s growth and global expansion plans.
The airline had announced Walsh’s appointment in March this year.
With over four decades of experience in the global aviation industry, Walsh will work closely with the Board and the management team to build on IndiGo’s operational strengths while advancing its long-term strategic objectives, the airlines said in a release here.
Welcoming Walsh, IndiGo Managing Director Rahul Bhatia said the airline, as it enters its third decade, is poised for its next phase of growth and expressed confidence that Walsh’s global aviation experience and strategic expertise would strengthen the carrier’s international expansion and reinforce its position in the global aviation industry.
Assuming charge, Walsh said IndiGo had established itself among the world’s largest airlines within two decades and noted that India’s rapidly growing aviation market offers significant opportunities for future expansion.
He said he looked forward to working with the airline’s leadership and employees to build on its success and strengthen its global presence.
Walsh has more than 40 years of experience in the aviation sector. Beginning his career as a pilot with Aer Lingus, he later became the airline’s Chief Executive Officer in 2001.
He subsequently served as Chief Executive Officer of British Airways from 2005 to 2011, Chief Executive Officer of International Airlines Group (IAG) from 2011 to 2020, and most recently as Director General of the International Air Transport Association (IATA).
As CEO, Walsh will be responsible for the airline’s overall management and strategic direction, with a focus on accelerating international growth, driving operational excellence, strengthening network and commercial strategy, and enhancing customer experience, the airline added.
