TTD Discontinues Elephant Blessings Following Mahout’s recent Death

Tirumala, Oct 13 (TNT): The Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) has discontinued the practice of temple elephants blessing devotees as a precautionary measure following the death of mahout Chandra Sekhar Reddy, who was critically injured in an elephant attack at the TTD-run Sri Padmavathi Ammavari Temple in Tiruchanur near Tirupati.

Addressing the media at the Media Centre in Rambagicha-2 here on Tuesday, TTD Sri Venkateswara Gosamrakshana Shala Director Sivakumar said the decision was taken in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) prescribed for the safe handling and management of elephants.

He appealed to devotees to follow the prescribed safety guidelines and maintain a safe distance from the elephants. Clear instructions had also been issued to mahouts to ensure compliance with the regulations, he added.

Sivakumar said TTD accorded priority to the protection and welfare of cows and other animals maintained at its gosala.

The gosala regularly supplies milk, curd and butter required for rituals and religious services at TTD temples. It also supplies around 15,000 litres of milk daily to the Matrusri Tarigonda Vengamamba Anna Prasadam Complex in Tirumala, he said.

Special measures had been initiated to safeguard the health and well-being of the animals, with dedicated veterinary teams providing medical care.

These include a team from Kerala and doctors serving under the Srivari Vaidya Seva initiative, he added.
