TSCS Explores Gene Therapy Access for Thalassemia Patients Across India
Hyderabad, Aug 14 (TNT): The Thalassemia & Sickle Cell Society (TSCS) has initiated efforts to explore access to gene therapy for thalassemia patients across India, following a visit by its delegation to leading treatment centres in Thailand.
The delegation visited Thailand and other countries recognised as major destinations for gene therapy in thalassemia care to study treatment protocols, infrastructure and potential collaboration opportunities, the Society said in a release here on Friday.
The visit was undertaken in partnership with Dr Sunil Bhat, a bone marrow transplant (BMT) specialist, and his team.
The TSCS delegation comprised Dr Chandrakant Agarwal, President; Dr Suman Jain, Chief Medical Research Officer and Secretary; Naresh Rathi, Vice-President; and Dr Nishant Mittal, Scientist.
During the visit, the delegation held discussions with medical experts on the treatment protocols and infrastructure required for gene therapy and explored ways to make the emerging treatment option accessible to patients in India.
Dr Chandrakant said the visit marked a significant step towards bringing advanced treatment options to thalassemia patients in the country.
The society said it would build on the exploratory visit by working with medical experts and international partners to lay the groundwork for gene therapy access in India.
The initiative aims to reduce patients’ dependence on lifelong blood transfusions and improve long-term treatment outcomes, the Society added.
