Telangana Prisons Department Opens Fifth Jail Museum in India at Chanchalguda

Hyderabad, May 12 (TNT) :Telangana Prisons Department inaugurated a modern Jail Museum at the State Institute of Correctional Administration (SICA), Chanchalguda here on Tuesday, offering visitors a unique insight into the evolution of prison administration and inmate life.

Governor Shiv Pratap Shukla inaugurated the Museum along with the unique “Feel the Jail Experience / Jail Anubhavam” established at Chanchalguda.

According to Dr. Soumya Mishra,Director General of Prisons & Correctional Services, Telangana, the initiative places Telangana among a select few states in the country to have a dedicated jail museum, making it the fifth such museum in India after those in Andaman & Nicobar, Alipore in Kolkata, Bengaluru and Goa.

The museum was revitalised and expanded with the support of senior prison officials.

Earlier exhibits from the old Sangareddy jail museum, which had collapsed a few years ago, were relocated and developed into a modern immersive museum at SICA, Chanchalguda.

She said the museum presents the evolution of prisons from ancient punishment systems to modern correctional and rehabilitative institutions through thematic paintings, recreated prison cells, shackles, chains, fetters and original prison artefacts.

Special audio and video chambers explain prison administration processes including inmate visits, court productions and routine jail activities, offering the public a realistic understanding of prison functioning, she said.

A major attraction of the initiative is the “One Day Jail Experience” under the “Feel the Jail” concept, where visitors can experience prison food, living conditions and daily routines to better understand jail life and correctional systems, she said.

The Telangana Prisons Museum at SICA, Chanchalguda has been opened to the public from April 28, 2026.
