Telangana Cyber Security Bureau warns Cricket Fans Against Fake IPL Ticket Scams

Hyderabad, May 20 (TNT): The Telangana Cyber Security Bureau (TGCSB) on Wednesday issued an advisory warning cricket fans against rising incidents of fake IPL ticket scams being operated through social media platforms, fake websites, Telegram and WhatsApp groups, and unauthorised agents.

According to the advisory issued by TGCSB Director Shikha Goel, cybercriminals are targeting IPL fans by offering fake VIP and VVIP passes, heavy discounts and last-minute ticket deals for IPL matches.

In several cases, fraudsters allegedly collect money through UPI payments, QR codes or bank transfers before either sending fake tickets or disappearing after receiving payment, she said.

The TGCSB clarified that the “District App” is the only official ticketing partner for IPL ticket bookings.

The bureau listed several warning signs commonly associated with such frauds, including unusually heavy discounts for sold-out matches, pressure tactics claiming “only a few tickets are left”, use of personal UPI IDs instead of official payment gateways, fake booking confirmations, edited payment receipts and newly created social media pages with very few followers, she said.

Advising the public to remain cautious, she urged citizens to verify website URLs before making payments, avoid purchasing tickets from unknown agents or social media sellers, and refrain from sharing OTPs, banking credentials or payment screenshots.

Victims or individuals noticing suspicious activity have been asked to immediately report the matter by calling the Cyber Crime Helpline number 1930 or by lodging complaints through the official portal at cybercrime.gov.in.
