Telangana CM Revanth Reddy Calls for Nationwide ‘SIR Go Back’ Movement, Raises Concerns Over Delimitation
New Delhi, Sept 28 (TNT): Telangana Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy on Monday called for a nationwide ‘SIR Go Back’ movement, alleging that the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls was being used to delete voters opposed to the BJP-led government.
He also raised concerns over the proposed delimitation of constituencies, arguing that southern states could lose relative political representation.
Speaking at the ‘India’s Next Chapter’ session at the Pratidin Conclave in New Delhi, Reddy compared the proposed movement with the ‘Simon Go Back’ campaign during the freedom struggle and urged opposition leaders to unite against the SIR exercise.
Reddy accused the Election Commission of India of centralising decision-making and alleged that the electoral roll revision could affect the voting rights of people critical of the Union government. These were allegations made by the Chief Minister during the session.
On delimitation, he proposed extending the freeze on the number of Lok Sabha seats for another 25 years, stating that southern states which had implemented family-planning measures should not be disadvantaged in parliamentary representation.
The Chief Minister also alleged that Telangana was not receiving adequate support from the Centre for key infrastructure projects, including the Regional Ring Road, Metro Rail expansion and national highways.
He said he was ready to debate Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the development of states.
Highlighting the Telangana government’s priorities, Reddy said it was focusing on strengthening public education, improving healthcare and equipping students with skills required for employment.
He referred to the establishment of the Young India Skills University and Advanced Training Centres, along with industry partnerships to provide job-oriented training.
Recalling his political journey, Reddy said he began as a Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency member in 2006, became an MLC in 2007 and later joined the Telugu Desam Party.
He won the Assembly elections in 2009 and 2014 before joining the Congress in 2017 and winning the 2019 Lok Sabha election.
He said his meeting with Congress leader Rahul Gandhi influenced his decision to join the party, adding that he was impressed by Gandhi’s commitment to the country.
