Telangana Assembly Monsoon Session Set for Stormy Start
Hyderabad, Sept 6 (TNT): The Monsoon Session of the Telangana Legislative Assembly is set to begin on Monday, with the ruling Congress and opposition BRS expected to clash over governance, unfulfilled poll promises and the absence of BRS president K. Chandrasekhar Rao from the House.
The BJP is also likely to raise several issues, including the alleged large-scale inclusion of private lands in the prohibited properties list under Section 22A of the Registration Act.
Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy has said his government is ready to debate all issues and challenged KCR to attend the session and debate the Congress government’s first 1,000 days in office against the 10-year rule of the previous BRS government.
Reddy has accused KCR of largely staying away from the Assembly and public engagements since the BRS lost power in December 2023.
Congress activists have recently staged protests demanding KCR’s resignation as Leader of Opposition over his absence from the House.
The Chief Minister has claimed that the state spent Rs 1.24 crore on KCR’s salary over the last 1,000 days and Rs 21 crore on his security, bullet-proof vehicles and other facilities.
The BRS is expected to strongly oppose the Congress demand. BRS Working President K.T. Rama Rao has accused the Congress government of failing to fulfil several election promises and alleged shortcomings in governance.
The BRS is likely to raise issues including pending tuition fee reimbursement dues, the proposed Rs 5 lakh Bharosa card for students, scooters promised to girl students and the proposed merger of polytechnic education with the Young India Skills University.
The BJP is expected to target the government over the inclusion of private lands in the prohibited list under Section 22A of the Registration Act and other alleged lapses in governance.
Another issue likely to come up during the session is the proposal to reduce the minimum age for contesting Lok Sabha and Assembly elections from 25 to 21 years.
Reddy had announced in July that the state government would seek to pass a resolution in the Assembly in this regard.
With the three major parties preparing to raise competing issues, the session is expected to witness heated exchanges and intense political debate.
