TDB extends Rs 116-cr support to Manastu Space for green propulsion technology

New Delhi, Oct 26 (TNT) : The Technology Development Board (TDB), Department of Science & Technology (DST),  has signed an agreement to provide Rs 116 crore in financial support to Manastu Space Technologies Private Limited, Navi Mumbai, for developing indigenous green propulsion systems for satellites and launch vehicles under the Research Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund.

The project, with a total cost of Rs 277.63 crore, aims to develop a scalable propulsion platform covering thrust requirements from 5 millinewtons to 300 newtons and advance the technology from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-6 to TRL-9, enabling wider deployment, an official release said on Monday.

The funding will be provided through optionally convertible debt (OCD), according to the Department of Science and Technology.

Manastu Space is developing a hydrogen peroxide-based green propellant system with additives, supported by an integrated engine and catalyst technology.

The system is designed to provide propulsion solutions for applications ranging from small satellites to higher-thrust systems used in space missions.

The project includes the development of propulsion engines, propellant feed systems and an ultra-high-temperature ceramic catalyst designed to operate under demanding conditions.

The propulsion technology has already been demonstrated in space.

The proposed programme will focus on further engineering, system integration, testing and validation to improve its performance, reliability and readiness for wider use.

The initiative falls under the deep technology sector, with space technology as its sub-sector, and is intended to strengthen India’s domestic capabilities in a critical segment of the space industry while reducing dependence on externally sourced technologies.

TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said indigenous propulsion technologies were essential to strengthening India’s capabilities across the space value chain.

The RDI Fund was supporting technology-intensive projects requiring sustained investment to progress from advanced development towards deployment, he added.

Manastu Space Co-founder and Chief Technology Officer said the support would help advance the company’s green propulsion technology through further development, integration and validation, with the objective of achieving TRL-9 and strengthening India’s indigenous space propulsion capabilities.
