Strand Life Sciences receives Indian patent for AI-based blood test platform for early cancer detection
Bengaluru, July 7 (TNT): Strand Life Sciences, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries Ltd., on Tuesday said it has been granted an Indian patent for an integrated platform that uses cell-free DNA (cfDNA) analysis for early cancer detection from a blood sample.
In a release, the company said the patented platform combines genome sequencing, quality control, methylation and fragmentomic feature analysis, and machine learning to detect the presence of cancer and predict its tissue of origin.
According to Strand Life Sciences, the technology analyses changes in DNA methylation patterns, which are widely recognised as a hallmark of cancer. The company said one of the key innovations covered by the patent is a sequencing-based approach that captures these methylation patterns with minimal sample loss, potentially improving the sensitivity of early cancer detection.
The company noted that India records an estimated 1.5 million new cancer cases annually, with many patients diagnosed at advanced stages when treatment options are more limited.
It said technologies capable of detecting cancer earlier could improve clinical outcomes and complement existing screening programmes.
Strand Life Sciences also said the platform could support large-scale screening as genome sequencing costs continue to decline, without requiring significant expansion of local healthcare infrastructure.
“Early detection is an increasingly relevant topic as cancer is becoming one of India’s greatest public health challenges. This patent reflects our commitment to developing scientifically rigorous, AI-enabled liquid biopsy technologies that can help detect cancer earlier from a simple blood sample,” Chief Executive Officer Ramesh Hariharan said.
The company said the patent strengthens its intellectual property portfolio in liquid biopsy technologies and supports its focus on developing AI-enabled molecular diagnostics for early cancer detection and precision oncology.
