SCR extends optional travel insurance to reservation counter bookings from Oct 27
The facility, hitherto available only to online ticket purchasers, will now cover passengers booking through Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters, SCR said in a release on Monday.
Passengers opting for the insurance must pay the ticket fare through digital payment modes, as cash payments will not be accepted.
They must also provide their mobile numbers to receive policy details directly from the insurance companies.
An insurance premium of 45 paise per passenger will be collected, and the coverage will apply to all passengers listed under a single Passenger Name Record (PNR), the release said.
Around 89 per cent of railway tickets across Indian Railways are booked online through IRCTC, while the remaining tickets are purchased at reservation counters.
The insurance coverage will be effective from the actual departure of the train from its originating station until its arrival at the destination, including incidents during boarding and deboarding.
The policy generally covers train accidents and specified untoward incidents under the Railways Act, including terrorist acts, violent robberies and accidental falls from running trains, subject to the terms and conditions of the insurance companies partnered with the Railways.
Passengers must indicate their willingness to avail themselves of the optional insurance facility at the time of booking, SCR added.
