Protection to Doctors, Medical Staff on Duty Assured: Kakinada Collector
Kakinada, Aug 9 (TNT): Kakinada District Collector M N Harendhira Prasad on Sunday assured doctors and medical staff that necessary measures would be taken to ensure their safety and protection while on duty.
Addressing ‘Abhaya Day’, organised by the Kakinada Obstetrics and Gynaecological Society at the Rangaraya Medical College auditorium here, the Collector said all necessary action would be taken within the legal framework to protect doctors and medical personnel from attacks at workplaces.
He said ensuring a safe working environment was essential for medical professionals to discharge their duties without fear.
Society president Dr Athaluri Satyavati, who chaired the programme, said the event was organised to remember the postgraduate woman student who was brutally murdered while on duty at RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024, and to raise awareness over recent incidents involving attacks on medical personnel.
She said the society was seeking government intervention to create an environment where doctors and medical staff could perform their duties freely and fearlessly.
As part of the programme, the society had earlier organised a walkathon, oath-taking programme and interactive session to highlight the safety concerns of medical professionals.
Third Additional District Judge Anandini, who attended as guest of honour, said emotions often ran high in present-day society and advised doctors to take necessary precautions at workplaces while ensuring the safety and treatment of patients.
Additional SP Dr Mahanti Kishore Kumar assured the gathering that police would provide protection to doctors and medical staff and urged them to immediately inform the police whenever any situation threatening their safety arose.
Director of Medical Education Dr A Vishnuvardhan said steps were being taken to strengthen security in medical college teaching hospitals, including installation of CCTV camera networks.
Rangaraya Medical College Principal Dr Usha Kiran said prompt action would be taken on complaints raised by doctors and students and urged them to bring their problems to the notice of the authorities.
Representing junior doctors, Dr Harikrishna, and representing nurses, Vijayalakshmi, spoke about the issues faced by medical personnel.
