Polling underway for 100 urban local bodies in Andhra Pradesh

Amaravati, Nov 1 (TNT): Polling for elections to 100 urban local bodies (ULBs) in Andhra Pradesh began at 7 am on Sunday, with elaborate security arrangements in place to ensure peaceful conduct of the elections.

Polling is being held in 13 municipal corporations and 87 municipalities and Nagar Panchayats and will continue until 5 pm, according to the revised schedule announced by the Andhra Pradesh State Election Commission.

Counting of votes will take place on November 3.

Elections in eight municipalities and Nagar Panchayats — Allagadda, Dachepalli, Darsi, Gurazala, Kamalapuram, Piduguralla, Proddatur and Rayachoti — were declared unanimous, with candidates for chairperson and ward member posts elected unopposed.

The police have deployed 36,351 personnel at 4,372 locations across the State to maintain law and order.

Senior police officers are supervising security arrangements, particularly at sensitive polling stations.

The elections are being held against the backdrop of clashes between ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) and opposition YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) cadres during the nomination process.

Police had registered cases in connection with the incidents.
