Michelin Launches First Made-in-India Passenger Car Tyre, Primacy 5

Chennai, Aug. 4 (TNT): Michelin on Tuesday announced the launching of  ‘MICHELIN Primacy 5′, its latest premium passenger car tyre for sedans and SUVs, marking the debut of the company’s first passenger car tyre manufactured in India for domestic consumers.

In a release, the company said the Primacy 5 has been engineered for internal combustion engine (ICE), hybrid and electric vehicles, combining advanced tread pattern optimisation and next-generation rubber compounds to deliver improved safety, comfort, handling and energy efficiency.

According to Michelin, the new tyre offers wet braking distances of over eight metres shorter than leading competitors on both new and worn tyres, a 9 per cent improvement in ride comfort, and an 8 per cent longer lifespan than its predecessor, the MICHELIN Primacy 4ST.

Speaking at the launch, Shantanu Deshpande, Managing Director, Michelin India, said the launch reflects the company’s commitment to developing products tailored to Indian consumers and supporting the country’s manufacturing ambitions.

He said the tyre has been developed and tested on vehicles commonly driven in India and benchmarked against leading competitors to meet the growing demand for safer, longer-lasting and more energy-efficient mobility solutions.

Michelin said the Primacy 5 is EV-ready, designed to handle the higher torque and weight of electric vehicles while also improving fuel efficiency in ICE vehicles. The tyre delivers a 6.5 per cent improvement in energy efficiency over the Primacy 4ST, helping enhance EV driving range and reduce fuel consumption in conventional vehicles.

The company noted that the MICHELIN Primacy 5 was named “Tyre of the Year 2025” at the Tyre Technology International Awards for Innovation and Excellence.

The tyre will be available from August 2026 through all MICHELIN Tyres & Service stores and around 800 authorised Michelin dealers across the country.
