IOA welcomes IOC announcement on 2036 Olympic, Paralympic host process
New Delhi, Oct 7 (TNT): The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) on Wednesday welcomed the International Olympic Committee’s (IOC) announcement of the cities and countries participating in the process to select the host of the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with India’s bid centred on Amdavad in Gujarat.
In a release, the Association said India’s Olympic and Paralympic ambition had been developed through close engagement with the IOC over the past 18 months.
Under the theme ‘Rising Together’, India’s vision seeks to use the Games as a catalyst for a wider sporting transformation, encouraging greater participation among young people and promoting healthier and more active communities.
The IOA said hosting the Games would provide a generational opportunity to place sport at the heart of national life and create opportunities in education and employment while leaving a long-term sporting legacy.
It also said India’s hosting of the Games would help the Olympic and Paralympic Movements reach new generations and audiences, particularly among the country’s young and digitally connected population.
IOA President P.T. Usha said India was honoured by the IOC’s recognition of its vision and aspirations for the 2036 Games and that ‘Rising Together’ represented a commitment to unite the country’s energy, ambition and diversity behind the Olympic dream.
Ms Usha said India aimed to present a Games that reflected the confidence of a young and dynamic country while contributing to the Olympic and Paralympic Movements’ efforts to reach new communities and horizons.
She said the IOA looked forward to continuing its engagement with the IOC and presenting India’s ambition to the Future Host Commission for the first time at the end of October.
Union Minister for Labour and Employment and Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandaviya said India’s ambition for 2036 was based on the belief that sport could help shape the future of the country.
He said hosting the Games could inspire millions of young Indians to participate in sport, promote healthier communities and create opportunities for youth in education, employment and social development.
