Hyderabad school student invents low-cost satellite weather receiver ‘SummitSathi’ for remote Himalayan villages

Hyderabad, Oct 22 (TNT) : In a grassroots innovation aimed at disaster resilience, Aagam Jain, a 12th-grade International Baccalaureate (IB) student at Indus International School, Hyderabad, has designed and developed ‘SummitSathi’, an indigenous, low-cost satellite weather receiver capable of downloading real-time cloud imagery directly from weather satellites without internet or cellular connectivity.
The system is being deployed across 10 remote villages in the Seraj valley of Himachal Pradesh’s Mandi district, covering an estimated population of over 1,000 residents through three receiving units.
Constructed using readily available off-the-shelf components, each unit costs approximately ₹68,000.
Three local residents have been trained as operators to decode and interpret overhead satellite passes, providing isolated mountain hamlets with continuous local weather situational awareness during severe monsoon cloudbursts and cellular network blackouts.
The developer clarified that while the receiver is not an automated cloudburst forecast tool or a substitute for India Meteorological Department (IMD) advisories, it serves as a critical supplementary frontline information source during emergencies.
Jain, who conceptualised the project following travels across high-altitude regions vulnerable to extreme weather, has filed an Indian patent application as the sole inventor.
The young researcher is also presenting the technical architecture of SummitSathi at the European Conference on Remote Sensing (ECRS 2026).
Beyond the disaster mitigation project, Jain has engaged in independent astrophysical research, writing proprietary software to analyze data from approximately 595 candidate exoplanets.
He also compiled an empirical ground-level study on urban light pollution by tracking Hyderabad’s night-sky brightness across 25 locations over a 24-month span.
To promote astronomy outreach, Jain founded the initiative ‘Summit Stargazer’ and authored a self-published astrophotography book titled A Window to the Universe, distributed to over 350 school students.
A national-level track and field athlete in sprinting and hammer throw, he also leads his school’s 170-member athletics squad as captain.
