Hyderabad based pharma giant Dr Reddy’s to train over 5,000 healthcare professionals in obesity care
Hyderabad, Sept 14 (TNT): Dr Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd on Monday announced a nationwide educational initiative to strengthen India’s obesity care workforce by developing a network of Certified Obesity Educators.
Under the initiative, more than 5,000 nurses, diabetes educators, dietitians and allied healthcare support professionals will undergo specialised training in obesity prevention, risk assessment, patient counselling and long-term management.
The programme has been developed in collaboration with endocrinologists and clinicians and is aimed at addressing gaps in obesity awareness, patient engagement and continuity of care, Hyderabad based Pharma giant said in a release here.
The company said more than 254 million adults in India are estimated to be living with generalised obesity, while around 351 million are affected by abdominal obesity.
It noted that obesity is increasingly associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, fatty liver disease and other metabolic disorders.
Following certification, the trained professionals will be equipped with evidence-based knowledge and practical skills to support obesity risk assessment, lifestyle modification, behavioural change and treatment adherence, besides promoting structured long-term obesity management.
M V Ramana, CEO, Global Generics, Dr Reddy’s Laboratories, said addressing obesity required a broader support ecosystem involving informed patients, trained professionals, sustained counselling and coordinated care.
The programme aims to create a cadre of trained professionals who can work alongside physicians and support patients throughout their obesity management journey, the company said.
It is also intended to improve continuity of care, encourage earlier intervention and contribute to better long-term health outcomes, the company added.
